Fishing is a popular pastime among people across the world. It can be a relaxing way to spend an afternoon as well as provide food to eat and enjoy after you’re done. Check out these top fishing spots located in and around La Crosse, Wisconsin. 

Copeland Park

Copeland Park has been open in La Crosse since 1909. It is best known for its historic train, although locals also enjoy cheering for the Loggers baseball team at this park. Copeland Park is also a popular fishing area, where you and your family can enjoy a day on the water. You’ll see the boat launch near the water access, so feel free to bring your boat and cast your line. Anglers have caught various types of fish at this location.

Additional amenities at Copeland Park include open green space, a playground, several covered picnic areas, tennis courts, an ice skating rink, basketball courts, baseball and softball fields, a wading pool, and a floral area.

Lake Onalaska

Lake Onalaska is a reservoir located between Wisconsin and Minnesota on the Black and Mississippi Rivers. It measures 4 miles in width, making it the widest point on the Mississippi River. This lake is also about 10 miles from La Crosse, making it a popular place to fish. The maximum depth of Lake Onalaska is 40 feet, while the average depth is around 6 feet. It’s accessible via a boat ramp, or you can fish from the banks. Anglers have been known to catch walleye, bluegill, smallmouth and largemouth bass, and northern pike at this location.

Lake Winona

Although Lake Winona sits in the state of Minnesota, it’s only about 30 miles from La Crosse, making it another great fishing location. The lake is surrounded by a city park that has playgrounds, an ice skating rink during the winter, soccer and softball fields, a disc golf course, and more than 5 miles of walking and biking trails. For fishing, the park also has a boat ramp and a dock, allowing fishers to cast their lines from the dock or their own personal boats. 

A beach also provides swimming access to the lake. Fishermen have caught walleye, channel and flathead catfish, black and brown bullhead, green sunfish, white crappie, yellow perch, and bluegill in this 308-acre lake.

Neshonoc Lake 

Neshonoc Lake provides access to several fish species, including panfish, catfish, northern pike, and largemouth bass. It is 606 acres in size and has a maximum depth of 11 feet. Features include a beach and two boat ramps that provide access to the water. According to some previous anglers, the water clarity is a bit clouded, so be sure to bring brightly colored lures that can attract the fish. The lake is within La Crosse County, situated about 15 miles northeast of the city.
